In February 2004, with an investment of $ 6.5 million, Elon Musk became the company's largest shareholder. He has served as CEO since 2008. According to Musk, Tesla's aim is to help accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation and energy, which are available through electric vehicles and solar power. This was followed by the Model S sedan in 2012, the Model X SUV in 2015, the Model 3 sedan in 2017, and the crossover of the Model Y in 2020. The Model 3 is the world's best-selling electric car, and, in June 2021, became the first electric car to sell one million units worldwide. Tesla has been the subject of numerous lawsuits and controversies stemming from CEO Elon Musk's statements and actions as well as allegations of creative accounting, malpractice, workers' rights violations, and unresolved and dangerous technical issues with their products. In September 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered Tesla to submit details of all American vehicles sold with Autopilot following the organization's investigation into road deaths involving the use of Autopilot.
